Cyber Tips And Tricks

10 ways to prevent cyber attacks

10 Ways to Prevent Cyber Attacks
These are just a few simple steps you can take to reduce your risk of falling victim to a costly cyber attack:
  1. Train employees in cyber security principles.
Employees are just people, and people make mistakes.  Proper training in what to look for to prevent an accidental cyber attack is key to staying protected.
  2. Install, use and regularly update antivirus and anti spyware software on every computer used in your business.
Cyber attacks are an ever changing process.  New viruses, spyware, and malware programs are coming out every minute, and keeping your protection software updated helps prevent your exposure to these.
  3. Download and install software updates for your operating systems and applications as the become available.
New "holes" in operating systems and software are constantly being sought out by cyber criminals.  Keeping your operating system and operational software up to date, helps prevent these exploits.
  4. Regularly change passwords.
Having a good password policy with complicated passwords and regular changes will help lessen the likelihood that anyone outside your organization will figure out your passwords.
  5. Make backup copies of important business data and information.
Backups are important.  In the, hopefully unlikely, event of a breach, you can mitigate your losses by having regular backups ready to implement at a moments notice.
  6. Control physical access to your computers and network components.
It may sound simple, but limiting physical access to key components limits the ability for someone from the outside to plant anything, and limits internal accidental damages.
  7. Secure your Wi-Fi. If you have a Wi-Fi network for your workplace make sure it is secure, even your guest Wi-Fi.
Securing your Wi-Fi essentially is the same as locking the door on your house.  It's the first step to protect your data.
  8. Use appropriate user accounts for individuals.
Too much access to the wrong individuals can be a recipe for disaster.  Keeping yourself security by assigning properly security clearance for the correct employees is very important to keep your data safe.
  9. Limit employee access to authority to install software.
By also limiting the ability to install software, accidental malware installation becomes much less likely.
  10. Stay current with training employees in cyber security principles.
As said in number one, training is the number one key to prevent cyber attacks.
